Red Bones Ann Cleeves
by Ann Cleeves

book cover

I rate this book a solid 4 stars. The cover classes it as a thriller, but I thought it was more of a mystery than a thriller. A woman named Mima is killed one night on Whalsay Island, part of the Shetland Islands, Scotland. At first it is thought to be an accident, because a neighbor was out shooting rabbits at midnight in fog and accidentally shot her. But DI Jimmie Perez suspects that there is more to this and keeps digging. A second person is found dead, possibly suicide. Perez does solve the case, but the killer is not revealed until near the end, and the author left enough false clues, that I wasn't sure of the who or why until it all came together at the end. Anne Cleeves writes descriptive books. This series, set in the Shetlands, is best read in order, as I have been doing. Perez is identified as a "Black Shetlander,"i.e. descended form a shipwrecked Spanish Armada sailor in 1588. Some quotes: Mima's house: "Her house was tucked into the hill and you came on it very suddenly." Evelyn Wilson, describing university students working on an archaeological dig: "The two lasses from the university were there. What nice wee girls they are, although I think that Hattie could do with a bit of feeding up.. She's a skinny little thing. All eyes and bone." Perez thinking about his boss, the Procurator Fiscal: "He found it hard to explain the role of the Fiscal to English colleagues. Even Fran couldn't grasp it. 'But what does she do?' Perez always said that she was a cross between a magistrate and a prosecuting lawyer, but Fran didn't even get that." Jimmie is in a relationship with Fran, an English woman. Really enjoyed this book, especially the end. You know a book is me sinful when it makes you think and also brings you to tears!

The Book Of Longings Sue Monk Kidd

Excellent historical fiction novel! Sue Monk Kidd imagines the life of Jesus's wife. The story is well known but the addition of the historical content of how women were treated and thought of in the time of Jesus is very intriguing. Make sure to read the author's notes at the end of the book for a look at how she developed the concept for the book. A must read for historical fiction lovers!!

The images are breath taking. The story is enticing. Next read is the original text to get the full complexity of the characters. But the graphic novel is excellently done.

Why Kill The Innocent By C.s. Harris

4 stars for a solid addition to this excellent historical mystery series. It is set in London, January, 1814. Alexi Sauvage has introduced Hero Devlin to a 8 months pregnant wife of a recently impressed cooper. Her husband was snatched of the street by a Royal Navy press gang. She is desperate need of food and coal. Hero and her friend Alexi assist her in the successful birth of her child. They are returning to Hero's carriage when they stumble upon the body of a woman. Hero recognizes her as Jane Ambrose, piano teacher to Princess Charlotte, the Regent's daughter. She sends word to her husband, Sebastian St Cyr, Viscount Devlin. Sauvage has told Hero that the body was moved after death, due to the lack of blood from the wound. Devlin decides to investigate what was either a murder or manslaughter. However, the Palace does not want this classed as a murder, because it would embarrass the Royal family. The authorities announce that she died as a result of a fall, hitting her head. Devlin angers some powerful people by investigating and is attacked. He does solve the murder. There are many suspects with twists and turns in the plot. I was not sure of who the killer was until near the end. I like that the author incorporates the use of terms in use in 1814 London: Footpad=robber cutpurse=thief Description of Hero's clothes: "Unable to use her carriage in the snow-filled streets and scorning sedan chairs, she pulled on demi-broquins of fine morocco lined with fur, wrapped herself in a fur trimmed pelisse with a matching Swedish hat fastened up on one side, and walked." The author discusses the plight of the poor, compared with the rich and the inequities of limited suffrage, and limitations placed upon talented women in Regency Britain. I recommend that you read this series in order, as there are developments in Devlin's personal life throughout the series. Nice and naughty book. Two characters from worlds most of us don't understand, come together for the benefit of their families, not for love. It is a good, unpredictable read.

The Cat Who Could Read Backwards

I quite enjoyed the cat in this book. It was a nice quick read. The mystery wasn't the most interesting and am not fond of the result. Though, the interesting characters and town are enough of a reason to keep reading. Also, a very intelligent feline.

Wonderfully woven story about WWII heroine. I was turning pages all night trying to guess which sister was The Nightingale. The perfect amount of drama and intrigue to make great historical fiction.
