I wasn't sure I was going to like this book when I started it but I ended up getting caught up in the narrative and finding it to be a quick read. There is a lot in play in this novel with the main character having flashbacks about growing up in the town she returns to after her mother's death. There are themes of abandonment, mental illness, alcoholism and relationship problems that make the book a little overwhelming at times and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat at other times. Worth the read...

This book was not as good as Uprooted was but it was still well written. It was written in multiple different view points, which I think added to the story but there were times when it was hard to tell which person was narrating the story. I've also found that while most of her plot lines are well developed, her romance plot lines are not. They feel out of place and like they just put that as an afterthought. It felt abrupt and unnecessary to the plot, and took away from the magic of the story. Overall though it was a good book, and it's good if you ignore the poorly written romance

This bildungsroman touches on so many topics that are relevant in our society. It shows the journey of a social pariah dealing with racism, love, loss, and working through impossible conditions to achieve your goals. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

This author has a great "storytelling" voice. Her descriptions are rich but not overly loquacious. Her word choice is varied and precise. She develops her characters well and creates a compelling, moving plot.
